Islamic art and history for all - Digital Lab Academy 2025 starts 30 June!

Hello!

Reflecting on the work we've done on video games for education and public impact, Digital Lab Education Coordinator Sarah Slingluff and I put heads together on how to bring a concise intro to the vibrant art, architecture, and histories of Muslim societies and Islamic civilization around the globe to wider audiences.

The Digital Lab Academy is the result.

It launches 30 June and will be taught online by Sarah, so participants can join from anywhere.

It's short and to-the-point. It's open to anyone looking for a quick crash course of accurate information on Islamic art and history, whether to inspire their creative projects or to delve into an important chapter in global art and history that is still too little known and taught in colleges and universities.

We want to get accurate info about Islamic art and history to as many people beyond the ivory tower as possible. This includes artists and creatives who may not have had the chance to learn about global artistic traditions in their formal training, and anyone else who would love to learn more about this topic.

If you've participated in any of our Digital Lab field trips or game development experiences, or read our co-authored essay 'The 200-Million Student Classroom: Teaching Islamicate History, One Video Game at a Time?', you know that Sarah is a dedicated researcher, teacher, and museum professional who is committed to sharing knowledge with the public, and to working across the academy, video games, entertainment, and GLAM sectors for positive social impact.

If you or someone you know - a friend, a relative, a colleague - would love to learn about Islamic art and history in 2025, please share so we can get this knowledge to as many as possible.

It's not too late - all the info is on our website here.

Thanks so much!

Glaire, on behalf of Sarah and the team

p.s. If you're in Scotland this summer, we invite you to join us at our first Digital Lab Days event, 2-4 July in Edinburgh and Glasgow!
